Lesson Objective:

Learners will demonstrate understanding of how a character in a story responds to challenges by writing out their response online in a blog format. 

Subject Matter Content Standard: Reading Standards for Literature 2. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.

Student Research Questions:

Essential Question:  

1.  Give examples of two challenges the lead character faces and how the lead character handles those challenges.

Subsidiary Questions:

2.  How old was the author when he started writing The Black Stallion, and how old was the author when the book was published?
3.  Find an image of the author and cite the source of where you found the image.
4.  Is The Black Stallion a singular book?
5.  Give five synonyms for these words found in the book
            a. winner
            b. connection
            c. hundred
            d. mustang
            e. catch
6.  Compare and Contrast five similarities and five differences from the book to the movie
7.  Describe the setting of the book.  Does the book take place in only one place?
8.  Have you ever had a relationship with an animal?  Describe any similarities between your own relationship and the characters relationship. 
9.  If you had a horse as a pet how would you take care of it (i.e. what does a horse eat?  How often?  Where do they live?  Sleep?  Toys?).  Provide a generic monthly cost breakdown of owning a horse. 
10.  Going back to the Essential Question-do you agree or disagree with how the lead character handled the challenges faced?  What would you have done similarly or differently?
